*Oregon ASLA hopes to begin compiling a study materials resource library. If you are interested in contributing materials otherwise left to gathering dust on your bookshelf, ASLA would be happy to give them a new home and make them available to Emerging Professionals studying for licensure. Trustee Report - What's Up At National ASLA?

Dave Walters

Some of the highlights from our National Office the past month are as follows:

Governance and Administration

  • Applications for SITES pilot projects are due February 15, 2010.

  • In a conference call on December 10, the Board of Trustees approved editorial policies and a mission statement for Landscape Architecture magazine. The next day, the Selection Advisory Group met by conference call to begin the process of selecting a permanent editor for Landscape Architecture Magazine. The advisory group reviewed the 2008 reader survey, reviewed and discussed a draft position description/advertisement for the position, and discussed the selection process.

  • ASLA participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) upon the release of its survey regarding participation in the arts.  Among the survey questions, the NEA queried visits to a “historic park or monument, or tour buildings or neighborhoods for their historic or design value.” Although very highly rated, it still reflected a major reduction in such visits from past surveys.  The survey also revealed a strong participation rate for arts festivals or craft fairs.

Finance

  • CFO Mike O’Brien and EVP Somerville met with representatives of PNC Bank, which holds the mortgage on the ASLA headquarters building, to provide a status report on ASLA’s finances.  The bank representatives were pleased to learn that ASLA is on track to end the year in the black and that ASLA will be in compliance with the required mortgage debt covenant ratio.

Government Affairs

  • The Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards has reported to the LARE Prep Subcommittee that its list of reference materials for the Landscape Architect Registration Examination has been revised. These references had previously included a long list of texts, many of which were out-of-print. The revised list has been streamlined so that there are no more than five texts for each of the five sections of the LARE and several cover more than one section.

Public Relations and Communications

  • Reminder: the Call for Nominations for ASLA Honors is now open. The deadline is February 12, 2010. Nominations may be made by an individual ASLA professional member or a chapter and are very simple to assemble.

Publishing and Resource Development

  • Staff launched “Sustainable ASLA,” a new area on the ASLA web site that documents the full extent of activities, both through initiatives and in day-to-day operations, that walks the talk of sustainability. The page features ongoing proof points of our tagline, “Green Since 1899.”

  • Staff have launched two of a planned series of sustainable residential design guides online: improving water efficiency and energy efficiency. Next up: plants. Once completed, these definitive guides will be used to create a central, client-targeted residential resource.

Professional Practice
  • ASLA hosted the quarterly Smart Growth Network (SGN) meeting in Washington, DC, on December 9. The SGN is comprised of over 40 partner organizations, including ASLA. The meeting was preceded by an optional ASLA green roof presentation and tour and then EVP Somerville welcomed the group.
