Carbon drawdown: Sustainable Use of Concrete for Site Design

  • ASLA Oregon PO Box 5711 Portland, Oregon 97228 (map)

The concrete industry is very aware of the high carbon footprint of their product. The industry is actively implementing ways to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete. Portland’s low carbon concrete initiative is encouraging the selection of lower carbon concrete, there are several cutting-edge pilots and experiments seeking to reduce the carbon footprint even further. The webinar will address various ways to reduce the carbon footprint of using concrete for site work. The goal is to provide our local landscape architects, and those who work with them, information that they can readily use on their projects without the need for much additional research. The webinar is presented by the ASLA Oregon Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee. The focus will be on structures and pavements typically found in site designs.

The webinar will address the following topics: re-use of materials, lean design strategies, low- embodied concrete mixtures and how to specify these mixtures. Storing carbon from other sources in concrete mixtures. Alternatives to steel reinforcement. The importance of sustainability goals and communication.
