Letter from the President: Call to Service

Dear Members and Friends of ASLA Oregon,

I am reaching out to you regarding a number of vacancies on the Executive Committee (ExCom) of ASLA Oregon, your state chapter, and in the Mt. Hood Section.  Unfortunately, we had a couple of dedicated ExCom members resign suddenly to accept out-of-state personal and professional opportunities. We also have a position remaining open from last fall’s election.  The ExCom has a strong track record developing quality offerings for our Members, but with our reduced capacity, we might not be able to offer as many events and programs as we have in the past. Lest you wonder what’s going on, I wanted to reach out directly.

We are looking for volunteers interested in fulfilling the following open positions:

  • Vice President of Member Services: this person chairs our annual design and professional merit awards programs and serves as a point of contact and a resource for Members throughout the year.

  • Education Chair: this person works with event presenters to make sure their presentations are certified for professional development hours. The Ed Chair also ensures that attendees receive their educational credits from our programming.

  • Mt. Hood Section Chair: this person organizes a program of monthly or bimonthly social and/or educational events in the Portland area.

ASLA Oregon currently has a wonderful group of volunteers who are helping the ExCom to present the Design Symposium on April 4 and the Awards Soiree in early November.  We are also maintaining our local, state and national advocacy activities - but we could do even more with your help! I’d like to invite our Members to self-nominate for the important roles above.  Participation in the ExCom offers meaningful leadership opportunities, camaraderie and the deep satisfaction of giving back to your profession.

Would you like to know more?  Thinking of stepping into one of the vacancies but not sure what it involves?  Can you help with a piece of one of the openings above but can’t take on the whole role?  Please don’t hesitate to reach out. I would be happy to have coffee or talk with you about the work over the phone, or to add your name to the roster of volunteers.

Thank you, and happy spring!
